Nope, doesn't have to be a torroid. the TX I mentioned has two secondarys, both 9v, so you can condider this as 0-9v and 0-9v, (though being AC, neither is 0v and neither is 9v if you see what I mean) You can use these to produce a + and - supply as often used in solid state amps by having the two s...

Sorry, I was going to post last night, and forgot. The measured voltage will be 10-15% high without load. so the 280v will be fine for the 270v supply. Valve voltages don't need to be exact to work. And the 12v transformer can be used to give the heater supply, just use a extra RC stage, maybe a 3R3...
